Both born 1950, Kyiv Graduating from the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts in 1976 these tapestry artists became members of the Union of Artists of Ukraine in 1980. They have been working together since then and specialize in design for tapestries, mosaics, stained glass windows, and metallography. Ukraine has a long standing tradition of carpet weaving and today Olena Gnedash and Olexandr Medynskiy represent the best in contemporary Ukrainian tapestry formed by both the traditional and classical heritage. Their tapestries have all the subtle features of fine painting, revealing a graphical vividness and fascinating monumentality of heroic characters. Yet they retain the decorativeness and poetical nature inherent to tapestries. Olena and Olexandr prefer the traditional simple intertwining of threads, flat texture and classical square form. But they also elaborate new techniques of intermitting natural softness of wool with vibrant brightness of synthetic threads to achieve wonderful ornamental effects. Most of their works are kept in museums and private collections at home and abroad. Exhibitions Moscow: 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985 |
